Search Engine Optimisation
Facts
How do search engines work? Search Engines
keep directories (an index) of web sites, and some crawl (spider)
the Internet jumping from link to link looking for new web
pages.
Search Engines not only store web pages, in the index, they
contain other file formats such as pdf and images etc. When
a search engines crawls the Internet it categorises pages
and places responsibility on well established web sites. When
a robot crawls the Internet it can pull back an awful lot
of information (3.4 billion pages). Whilst it is true that
not even 20% of web sites are actually part of the visable
Internet the remaining sites that are present (in top positions
on search engines) receive a healthy amount of visitors passed
on by search engines. Search engines look at authoritive web
sites, and well established neigborhoods for good links to
follow. Being part of the traffic network is all important
to how a search engine might view your web site.
Google does this and values your site on votes amongst other
things.
Each site is given a vote ranking, for instance lets say
you have an incoming link originating from a high ranking
external source (seed site), your web sites votes will be
higher than that of a low ranking external link.
The more quality votes the better, this is achieved by strategic,
quality linking and inbound traffic planning. The most important
thing about the links is you need to have more quality inbound
links to you than your competitor.
Search Engines check and cross check various parts of your
web site and crawl the Internet looking for sites to add or
replace the existing. Google are constantly monitoring the
web to find change and get better information. Each month
the datacenters have a major update and they synchronise their
information. Google use over 15,000 normal PC's for this process
and use something called a robot. It is named a search engine
spider because it crawls the world wide web looking for links
and information. Search engines can probably calculate link
satuation, quality of content and other key aspects of your
site. The search engines robots are limited in intellegence
however they are becoming more clever each time they are tweaked.
If your site is not structured appropriately for these robots
to correctly evaluate your site, you could be missing out
on a mass of potential traffic from search engines. If your
site has not been correctly structured then you can use ad
words and other PPC
schemes to promote your business.
Sometimes a few minor tweaks is all you need to better optimise
your online existance, talk to a consultant about more information
in this area.
In order to have a chance to get in high rankings, you need
the knowledge to gain successful results. You can either learn
this yourself or you can speak to a 3rd party company
such as Adaptability.
Search
Engine rankings are calculated via algorithms and are
not manually worked out. Directories are human-powered such
as the Open Directory, they
rely on you submitting your site manually and then waiting
on them to review your submission. A listing can take several
months and some people do not even get a reply if their site
does not meet up to the standard.
The review will be done by a human and they will look at
your site themselves. If you change your web site it will
have no effect on the directory listing until you request
a change.
If you are interested in how the individual search engines
work, please log onto that particular search engine and view
the information that is offered.
The best way to find out how they work is to gain the experience
and read the articles. Gaining the experience means modifying
your web site and seeing how this effects your listings, if
this is too risky for your business or you need to outsource
then we can offer your business a whole variety of solutions
to fit your requirements.
