Search efull of controversy, some will say you can't make
a site optimized for search engines anymore. Others will argue
that optimization works 100% of the time, but what is the
real facts in relation to search engine optimisation?
Quick History Lesson
The Internet started out when the American government set
it free on the public some years back, in the early days it
had limited use. Now today it is widely used, has a vast geographical
covereage and the it's potential is unknown by many. Up until
now the democratic nature of the Internet (and the way links
were formed) made it a fair place for all. Google's founders
developed something called page ranking, and this has been
a measurement of a sites value and authority. As a site's
link structure/content grew, so did the page rank.
The world wide web was born out of such practices as link
exchanges, these links were formed and the Internet grew to
what we see today. Websites all over the world were (and still
are) connected together via a series of different connections.
Passing traffic over high speed devices, linking users to
websites and so forth. With the introduction to high speed
network technologies the Internet is now a vibrant medium
for small and large business alike.
The Evolution of WWW
This organic growth was overtaken by people understanding
the formulas of search engines, once this art was introduced
to firms deploying agressive marketing tactics, it paved the
way for keyword spamming and other unethical practices. The
firms using such tricks flooded search engines with sites
that were extreamly poor quality.
The Google Change - Florida Update!
In an atempt to promote a fair, democratic system search
engines like Google have started to fight back, but it's not
without casulties. In an effort to block out spam or at least
control it, Google has made some major changes to its rankings
formula, for instance they have introduced keyword stemming,
known as broad matching - it basically makes a cross reference
against more authoritive web sites than before when a search
query is made to Google, for instance optimisation, optimised,
optimizing all are relevant to a single subject, also some
people are suspecting more emphasis is made on neighborhoods
or seed sites that carry authoritive votes. These changes
have been named in the search engine industry as the Florida
Update.
Search Engine Spammers
Commercial sites have been racing ahead of organic growth
to gain an unfair competitive advantage, spammers have simply
sabotaged an ethical art and Google now have to seariously
think up new ways to beat the systems spammers are exploiting.
Its for these reasons many firms doing well on the Internet
have been effected by the recent change in Google's algorithms.
Eventually ethics will win the war on unethical practices
but it takes time and constant research. Some might say the
actual 'democratic' nature of the Internet and search engine
listings are becoming more distorted when spaming techniques
have been making business money and Google are ready to float
their business.
Google's IPO
Now with the IPO of Google lurking close by, and the Introduction
of Ad words (revenue stream for Google) the commercial side
of the Internet is now fast emerging again creating yet another
industrial shake up.
The dust from the .com bubble burst seems to be firmly settled,
now we are seeing major changes and the landscape of the Internet
once again is looking much brighter for firms, now business
and organisations can tap in to this vast resource by advertising.
Now their is 3 main ways to generate targeted leads on the
Internet, these are Internet Advertising, Search Engine Optimisation
and other services such as Internet Marketing. The question
now is not is it good for business, it's what promotion is
best for your firm. The question you should be asking yourself
is will earch engine optimisation be right for your business?
One thing is certain, the commercial prospect of profiting
from the Internet is now here, firms can now pay for sponsored
links such as ad words. In addition to this they can explore
search engine optimisation and Internet Marketing as a way
of saving money and/or to expand on the potential.
